The Inspiration

I had just completed Keren & Danni's Wedding Mosaic and so was free to start thinking and planning for Nat & Moni's piece. Both pieces had the same initial inspiration, though the presentation differed:

  1. To create an image of Nathanael & Monica that was made up of images of their friends and family.
  2. Create a community performance where all the guests at the reception placed transparent colour separated tiles onto a lightbox, in random order, to progressively create the final Mosaic image.

A PhotoMosaic was the obvious choice, I'd just finished the mosaics for our Bibbulmun Track walk, so had some idea of what was possible. All I had to do was to figure out how to get such a large number of photos to create the mosaic!

The initial idea for the image was a background of primary coloured duotoned photos with a naturally coloured couple in the foreground (as that built on the colours Nat and Mon were planning for the wedding). This changed after the test print as it didn't have the effect I was wanting; the final concept was a background of naturally coloured tiles with a foreground couple that coloured the 'underlying' tiles.

The PhotoMosaic helped me say what I wanted to show: the plethora of tiny facets of relationship that make the individuals who they are; Nat & Moni 'colouring' the experiences and history that their friends and family give to them amongst the full colouring of their friends and family.
