The Inspiration

I like to think it all began 12 years ago when I told my family what I wanted for my 50th birthday, which was an artwork each that had to fit together as a single piece (nothing that difficult, surely?). Sandi produced a wonderful piece that I like to call 'The Flying Man', which was composed of a large paper mache figure (flying) and 14 figurines hanging under that depicted some aspect of our life together that she appreciated.

The actual genesis of this piece is already lost in the mists of time, but I do remember that I was wanting a new and novel way of expressing my love and understanding. Maybe in my nievity I thought I'd do a poem written from Sandi's perspective that would accomplish that?

The poem ended up talking about many of the same things that Sandi's Flying Man did, which incidentally was hanging just over my head as I sat at my desk. So it seemed reasonable to include those images, and because the poem was sort of a backwards compliment, I thought if it was put together in a way that played tricks on the verse on the forward looking pages and visual tricks on the backwards looking pages it would hang together nicely as a piece (you'll need to study The Construction carefully to see how it all fitted together).

It's only now, putting these pages together that there is a bit of a pattern going on with my recent pieces: The boys' wedding pieces (Keren & Danni's performance and Nat and Moni's community art project) were based on an image made up of photos of their family and friend, and this is a present for Sandi made up of her reinterpretted artwork and photos.
